In addition to his office practice, Dr. Akalin is involved in a number of other activities dedicated to serving people with mental illness, to reaching people from marginalized and rural communities, and to helping colleagues by being available for consultation, training and supervision. The following are the agencies with whom Dr. Akalin is affiliated:
Dr. Akalin provides consultation to physicians at French Hospital on patients with complicated psychiatric and medical illness. He is a member of the Medical Staff, and the Bioethics Committee.
Toiyabe is a federally-funded clinic operated by a consortium of seven Tribes to provide health care to Native Americans in Inyo and Mono Counties. It is based in Bishop, California, where Dr. Akalin lived for many years. Dr. Akalin leads weekly case conferences with mental health and substance use treatment clinicians, and works closely with primary care colleagues. He enjoys caring for child and adult patients with a full spectrum of mental health and substance use disorders. He supervises a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner, Meghan Mckenna (link to Bio), who also provides services through his involvement at Toiyabe. Dr. Akalin does most of this work by telemedicine, but travels to Bishop several times a year to be on-site with colleagues and patients.
Northern Inyo Hospital is located in Bishop California and serves the people of Inyo and Mono counties. With substantial unmet need for psychiatric care in the community, Dr. Akalin worked with NIH administration and UCSF Medical Center to establish an outpatient psychiatric clinic open five days per week. He provides training and supervision for Sue Park (link to Bio), a licensed Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner who lives in Bishop and provides all of the direct care for patients at Northern Inyo Hospital.
Windhorse is a non-profit organization located in San Luis Obispo that provides unique team-based residential care to people experiencing severe psychiatric illness. Dr. Akalin provides the psychiatry component of the care for patients in treatment at Windhorse.
Transitions Mental Health is a non-profit organization dedicated to eliminating stigma and promoting recovery for people with severe mental illness. Dr. Akalin works as supervising psychiatrist and consultant to the Homeless Outreach Team.
Dr. Akalin provides consultation to administration and psychiatric services to students, staff and faculty at this small liberal arts college in Deep Springs, California.
Dr. Akalin has maintained his Board Certification in Family Medicine, and continues to volunteer one evening per month with colleagues providing no-cost care to the immigrant and farm-working community in Guadalupe, California.
Dr. Akalin maintains an ongoing commitment to teaching. He has taught medical students, family medicine residents, psychiatric residents, nurse practitioner students, and graduate students in psychology. Recently he has been teaching students from Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner training programs at Johns Hopkins University and George Washington University.
